Warnemunde & Rostock Germany

Our first disembarkation was in Warnemunde, Germany.  Warnemunde and the nearby city of Rostock are where all the cruise ships dock, allowing passengers to catch a train to Berlin.  Most of the excursions that the cruise offered for this port were for Berlin, a 3 hour train ride away. Since we had spent most of a week in Berlin last year, we chose to just stay local, relax and venture out on our own.  As usual, we managed to get the right train tickets but did not get them validated correctly and got scolded by the conductor.

At Rostock we went to St. Mary's church. It is a medieval church in the Gothic style. It isn't a big fancy church, but it is pretty. They have a huge pipe organ with a beautiful sound. The church has great acoustics. Someone was playing the organ while we were there.

At the other end of the sanctuary from the pipe organ is the oldest astronomical clock in the world.  Here is a very small blurb about the Rostock Clock.

The roads in the center of town have been bricked. There didn't seem to be much car/truck travel on them, but that could also have been because it was  Sunday. People were walking in the narrow streets as they looked in shop windows. Not many of the shops were open. We also saw part of the old city walls and the gate towers on each end of the old city. In the New Market area was a big open square. Several restaurants were open with seating in the square like we have seen so many other places. We enjoyed sitting out with a soda and people watching.

We went back to Warnemunde to eat lunch. There were many shops open here. We saw someone had nice looking sausage on a crusty roll. We went to where they bought lunch to get ours! It was good, not the best we've had, it not the worst either.

We walked along the "boardwalk" beside the canal going through the city. It is lined with shops & cafes on the land side, and sailboats on the canal side. The boardwalk leads to two destinations; the lighthouse  and a huge beach. Right where the path splits for these two destinations, there is another older lighthouse (shown above) that can be climbed for some fantastic views.

The beach is a popular spot on a beautiful day like we had. It was packed with people enjoying the warm sun, splashing in the water, lying out in the sun, flying kites, picnicking, etc. Sail and motorboats were out in the water. It was sure a nice day for these activities.
