Copenhagen Denmark

Our first stop in Copenhagen was Kronborg Castle or as it is called, Hamlet's castle. It is said to be the inspiration for William Shakespeare and the setting of his play, Hamlet. We saw it only from the outside.

The bridge over the moat to the outer castle wall.

This was the outer wall entrance to Frederiksborg Castle, just past the outer moat.  The castle is situated on three small islands creating a series of moats around the center structure.

The fountain and outer courtyard between the two moats.

Here is the Ballroom.  The orchestra sat in the small balcony above the dance floor.  There was only one fireplace at the far end where the King sat, everybody else had to dance to stay warm.

The dimensional ceiling is highly decorated and includes many paintings.

On the second floor of the chapel, you can look down onto the pews and see the beautiful pipe organ at the far end.

We ran into a Viking along the way...

This is Fredericks Church taken looking through the fountain at Amalienborg, where the Royal Palaces are located.

This is the "Postcard" view of the quaint city of Copenhagen, everybody takes this picture of the colorful houses along the canal. Too bad it was a cloudy day.

Our guide took us to see the Little Mermaid statue, (from the fairy tale by Hans Christian Anderson) located on the promenade.

She related the fairy tale to us, making sure to let us know it was a very sad tale, not like Walt Disney's Little Mermaid movie.

The mermaid seems so lonely here on her rock.

Actually it was so crowded it was difficult to get a picture. People climbed all over the statue to get their picture and then just stayed there.

Now the poor mermaid looks like she has climbed on the rock and to get away from everyone.

As we were driving along in the tour bus, we took pictures of buildings we saw along the way. We thought we would share this little bit of Denmark with you.

Some were small cottages with very small "gardens", or yards as we call them.

Others were larger, with thatched roofs. We don't know why the wood is along the roof ridge.

We saw more large houses with very large, sweeping lawns.

We passed this modern designed financial center. It seems a little odd with all the much older homes.

We don't know what this building is, but it looks like R2D2, or maybe Oblena on Real Monsters.

Look at the balconies, and the way the doors are set in, of this older apartment building.

And these columns .....

This seems to be a "modern" design with the bubble windows and bump out corner windows, but it was probably built many years ago.

We have certainly enjoyed seeing many types of architecture during our travels, from the ancient ruins in Ireland and Jordan to the very modern structures in Dubai and Doha.
