Today we walked to the Hofburg Palace, where we toured the Imperial apartments. We saw some of the china & silver collections. It was not permitted to take photos in the palace. It was a beautiful day with nice temps & blue skies.
The palace was very nice. It seemed to me to be more quietly elegant in an understated way than the lavishness of Peterhof & Catherines Palace in St. Petersberg, Russia. The walls were white with marble door frames and gold rococo type trim. There were not as many murals on the walls & ceilings either. Kind of "old money & power" vs new.
The dome had very ornate statues with gold embellishments which looked nice in the morning sun.
Statues and fountains are large, stately & very decorative with lots of carvings, large figures and many columns.
The statutes are representative of mythical characters. The art work is quite well done and the people almost seem alive.
We also walked to the Parliament building & the Rathaus, or City Hall. Like many of the buildings here in old town Vienna, these buildings are very grand in size, style & decor.
Liberty Statue in front of the Parliament building. The picture does not do justice to this very beautiful statue and fountain.
Base of the Parliament Liberty statue.
Parliament with the Rathaus in background.
Rathaus (City Hall) There was some type of carnival or festival going on which really messed up our pictures.
Close up of the Rathaus. Notice the man on the balcony? He gives this beautiful building some size perspective.
